Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem (FDFA) en State of Fashion maken de ontwerpers bekend die zijn geselecteerd voor het Open Call programma 2026 in Rozet in Arnhem. Na een selectie uit 37 inzendingen voor de Open Call van dit jaar zijn Youngjin Choe, Harm Coordes, Mirte Engelhard, Karin Mientjes (Collective Works) en Lisette Ros gekozen om nieuw werk te presenteren tijdens de State of Fashion Biënnale 2026 | Available to Promise; Hidden Systems, Shared Futures. De tentoonstelling is gedurende de Biënnale gratis te bezoeken van 14 mei tot en met 28 juni 2026 in Rozet.
De Open Call nodigde ontwerpers en makers met een band met Arnhem uit om te reageren op de centrale vraag van de Biënnale 2026: welke beloftes kunnen we vandaag de dag nog doen binnen de systemen van mode? Inzendingen verkenden thema’s als Develop, Distribute, Hype, Experience, Transform en richtten zich op zowel de zichtbare als onzichtbare structuren die mode en de samenleving vormgeven.
Na een zorgvuldige beoordeling selecteerde de jury, bestaande uit State of Fashion, FDFA, Rozet, ArtEZ, Rijn IJssel en Museum Arnhem, vijf ontwerpers om nieuw werk te ontwikkelen voor de editie van 2026. Hun projecten zijn tijdens de Biënnale te zien in Rozet. Daarnaast krijgen de ontwerpers voor het eerst de mogelijkheid om hun werk tot leven te brengen via een eenmalige performance, activatie of presentatie in de historische ondergrondse kelders van Arnhem. Daarmee veranderen deze bijzondere ruimtes in plekken voor ontmoeting, dialoog en experiment.
Youngjin Choe ziet mode als een manier om verhalen te vertellen en emoties over te brengen, in plaats van alleen kleding te maken. Persoonlijke ervaringen uit zijn jeugd, over pijn en heling, vertaalt hij naar krachtige silhouetten, doordachte materiaalkeuzes en een expressief gebruik van licht. Door traditionele Koreaanse vormen te combineren met westerse stijlen onderzoekt hij thema’s als identiteit en verandering, waarmee hij directe en betekenisvolle ontmoetingen met het publiek creëert.
Onlangs ontving Choe de Lichting Award 2025 voor Best Graduate Collection tijdens Amsterdam Fashion Week. In zijn werk brengt hij erfgoed en persoonlijke verhalen samen in een eigenzinnige, uitgesproken stijl. De prijs bevestigt zijn grote potentieel.

Harm Coordes beweegt zich op het snijvlak van mode, performance en interactie. In zijn werk benadert hij kleding niet als een afgerond object, maar als iets dat je samen ervaart. Met hergebruikte materialen en speelse, draagbare ontwerpen nodigt hij het publiek uit om actief mee te doen — zowel fysiek als sociaal. Zo ontstaan gezamenlijke momenten die open, toegankelijk en luchtig zijn.

Mirte Engelhard werkt met textiel, herinnering en co-creatie om intieme installaties te maken die je als bezoeker echt ervaart. In haar werk onderzoekt ze momenten van overgang en onzekerheid. De stoffen die ze gebruikt vertellen persoonlijke en gezamenlijke verhalen. Door mensen uit te nodigen om ervaringen rond verandering en verlies te delen, creëert ze een ruimte om samen stil te staan en na te denken. Tijdens de Biënnale krijgt deze aanpak vorm in een installatie die individuele herinneringen met elkaar verbindt tot een collectief verhaal.

Karin Mientjes werkt op het snijvlak van grafisch ontwerp, textiel en ruimtelijk werk. In haar praktijk ziet zij beweging niet als een visueel effect, maar als een wezenlijk onderdeel van het materiaal zelf.
In haar nieuwe werk onderzoekt zij hoe textiel sporen draagt van arbeid, circulatie en herhaling, en hoe deze processen het modesysteem door de tijd heen vormgeven. Met een kinetische en interactieve installatie nodigt zij bezoekers uit om zelf in beweging te komen en hun eigen gedachten en reacties toe te voegen. Zo groeit het werk stap voor stap uit tot een collectief geheel en wordt mode zichtbaar als een gedeeld en voortdurend proces.

Lisette Ros is conceptueel- en performancekunstenaar die het lichaam inzet als vertrekpunt en middel om gedrag, identiteit, afkomst en (onzichtbare) verhalen te onderzoeken. In haar werk komen persoonlijke, culturele en lichamelijke thema's samen in een gedeelde ervaring.
Voor ‘Available to Promise’ beweegt Ros zich tussen performance, textiel en zintuiglijk onderzoek. Ze onderzoekt geur als een onzichtbare drager van herinneringen, identiteit en culturele geschiedenis. Een gedragen kledingstuk vormt het uitgangspunt: een object dat in de loop van de tijd sporen heeft verzameld van lichamen, beweging, aanwezigheid en afwezigheid. Met participatieve werkwijzen en traditionele (textiel) technieken verbindt zij persoonlijke en collectieve verhalen. Zo ontstaan ruimtes waar intieme herinneringen en materialen een vehikel zijn voor zorg en ontmoeting. Haar werk onthult verborgen systemen tussen connectie en culturele erfenissen en verschuift de aandacht van het zichtbare naar de lichamelijke en zintuiglijke ervaring van mode.

The Open Call invited designers and makers with a connection to Arnhem to respond to the Biennale’s 2026 central question: What promises can still be made within fashion’s systems today? Submissions explored themes such as Develop, Distribute, Hype, Experience and Transform addressing both the visible and invisible structures that shape fashion and society.
Following a careful selection process by a jury representing State of Fashion, FDFA, Rozet, ArtEZ, Rijn IJssel, and Museum Arnhem; Youngjin Choe, Harm Coordes, Mirte Engelhard, Karin Mientjes (Collective Works), and Lisette Ros were selected to develop new work for the State of Fashion Biennale 2026 edition. Their projects will be showcased at Rozet during the Biennale, and for the first time in this edition, the designers will also have the opportunity to bring their work to life through a one-off performance, activation, or show in Arnhem’s historic underground cellars — turning these atmospheric spaces into hubs of surprise, dialogue, and experimentation.
Youngjin Choe explores fashion as a form of meaningful storytelling and emotional communication, rather than simply garment-making. Rooted in deeply personal narratives of childhood, pain and healing, his work translates inner experience into powerful silhouettes, thoughtful material choices and expressive use of light. By combining traditional Korean design with Western clothing languages, he creates layered reflections on identity and transformation that resonate in one-on-one encounters with the audience.
Choe’s promise was recently recognised when he won the Lichting Award 2025 for Best Graduate Collection at Amsterdam Fashion Week, highlighting his ability to combine heritage, rebellion and poetic expression in work that also shows clear potential for further artistic development.

Harm Coordes works at the intersection of fashion, performance and participation. His practice explores clothing as something to be experienced collectively rather than viewed as a finished object. Using reused materials and playful, wearable forms, his work invites audiences to engage physically and socially, creating shared moments that are humorous and approachable.

Mirte Engelhard works with textile, memory and participation to create intimate, experiential installations. Her practice explores moments of transition and uncertainty, using layered fabrics that carry personal and collective histories. By inviting others to share stories of change, loss and transformation, her work becomes a shared space for reflection, where the in-between is not something to overcome, but something to inhabit together. During the Biënnale, this approach unfolds into a quiet yet powerful installation that grows from individual memories into a collective expression.

Karin Mientjes works across graphic design, textile, and spatial installation, focusing on movement as a material condition rather than a visual effect.
In the new installation, she explores how textiles carry traces of labour, circulation, and repetition, and how these processes shape the fashion system over time. Through a kinetic and participatory installation, visitors are invited to physically engage with moving textiles and add their own reflections, allowing the work to grow collectively. This approach turns fashion into a shared, ongoing process.

Lisette Ros is a conceptual and performance artist who uses the body as a tool, source and medium to research behavior, identity, ancestry and (invisible) narratives. Her work weaves personal, cultural and embodied histories into collective experience.
For ‘Available to Promise’ Ros works at the intersection of performance, textile and sensory research, exploring scent as an invisible carrier of memory, identity and cultural history. For this work, she will center on a piece of clothing as something worn over time and bearing traces of bodies, movement, presence and absence. Through participatory processes and traditional (textile) techniques, she brings together personal and collective histories, transforming intimate memories and material into shared spaces of care and reflection. Her work reveals hidden systems of inheritance and connection, shifting the focus from the visual to the embodied and sensory dimensions of fashion.
